Nashville, Tenn. (October 16, 2014) - Rocketown, a Nashville-based nonprofit agency, hosted their annual Comedy For A Cause event on Monday night, October 13. Despite the weather, more than 500 people attended the event to support Rocketown and see St. Louis-based comedian Tim Hawkins, the entertainer for the evening.
The evening started off with a silent auction where many of Nashville's most recognizable faces were bidding on more than 150 items donated by celebrities and local businesses. Rocketown Chairman, Mark Blaze opened the night's festivities with a welcoming speech and thanked everyone involved including Co-Chairs, Kitty and Pat Emery.
The evening was nothing short of inspiring. One of the biggest highlights of the night occurred when Nashville Predators Forward, Mike Fisher, alongside Rocketown Founder, Michael W. Smith and representatives from Boston-based Sun Life Financial Group, surprised one Rocketown youth with a $5,000 scholarship for college. Rocketown's Development Director, Jenny Myhr said, "Comedy For A Cause is a fun and hilarious benefit for Rocketown. All of the funds raised during the event are poured back into Rocketown so that we may continue to serve the youth of Nashville and middle Tennessee. It has been a wonderful evening, and we are so grateful for everyone that joined us despite the weather to show their support for not only our cause but also for the youth of Nashville."
Founded by contemporary Christian music artist Michael W. Smith in 1994, Rocketown serves children and teens through innovative and one-of-a-kind programs. Our mission is to offer hope to the next generation through Christ's love. Our vision is to be THE place of peace, purpose, and possibilities for youth. All young people are welcome at Rocketown, and we regularly interact with those who are underserved, unsupported, disconnected and feel isolated and hopeless. We believe young people grow and learn more readily in a community that is welcoming, diverse and challenges them to think.
